Put this car accident checklist in your glovebox

You've just been in a car accident and now your head is spinning. Try to stay focused and remember that list you printed off the personal injury attorney's website. It's in your glovebox, remember?

Save this checklist for after a car accident and put it in your glovebox. After a crash you're not thinking clearly, but if you have the following list, you'll know exactly what you need to do:

-- Remain at the accident site: Leaving an accident, even a simple fender-bender is against the law. You could be arrested for fleeing an accident site.

-- Put out warning cones: If you have warning cones, flares or a flashlight, make sure to use them after a crash. Make the accident scene as visible as possible to prevent further accidents and injuries.

-- Contact police: Call 911 and notify them of the situation and any injuries. Unless the crash vehicles are causing a problem for traffic, leave them where they are.

-- Go medical help: If you're injured, seek medical attention immediately. Your health is always your first priority.

-- Be clear when speaking with police: Tell the police what happened as best you can. Don't admit to any fault, but tell them what happened. If authorities ask you whether you're hurt, but you don't know, simply tell them that you're not sure.

-- Take pictures and interview witnesses: Take pictures of your injuries and the crash scene. Also ask witnesses what they saw while taking notes and recording their contact information.

-- Trade information: Make sure to get contact information, license plate numbers, divers' license numbers, addresses, phone numbers and the names of witnesses and anyone involved in the crash.

-- Contact your insurer: Tell your insurance company that you've been in a crash and notify them of all the details.

-- Keep everything in a file: Be sure to keep a medical file, a record of any costs incurred as a result of the accident, and also keep police records and anything else pertaining to the accident.
