A tragic pedestrian accident happened in Time Square last week, after an 26-year-old man from the Bronx drove his vehicle down Seventh Avenue. The driver struck 23 pedestrians, injuring 22 of them and killing one. The woman who died was an 18-year-old woman from Michigan.
According to one witness, it appeared as if the man was purposefully trying to hit the pedestrians. Witnesses were stunned and frightened, as the man finally crashed his vehicle into a barrier. The driver climbed out of his vehicle to be met by two bystanders who apprehended him and waited for police to arrive.
Authorities suspect that the man was high on some kind of narcotic substances at the time of the accident, and that he was in a state of delusion. When police arrested the man, he allegedly told them that this was going to be the last day of the earth. He further said that voices were telling him that the officer planned to kill him.
The man has since been charged with 20 counts of attempted murder, one counts relating to aggravated vehicular homicide. Police suspect that he may have been intoxicated by PCP at the time they arrested him. However, as to the exact reasons why this man mowed down 23 people time square, police and authorities are baffled.
If you're struck by a drunk, intoxicated or otherwise deranged motorist in New York, due to no fault of your own, you may be able to pursue financial justice in court. By enlisting the help of a personal injury lawyer, injured pedestrians can pursue money to pay for their medical care by filing a civil lawsuit against the person or party at fault for their injuries.
