Queens man's hand amputated at hospital after pneumonia diagnosis

A Queens resident held a press conference on Thursday, June 22, 2017, to announce that he has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Elmhurst Hospital. He alleges that, although he entered the hospital initially to be treated for a case of pneumonia, he ultimately walked out of the city-run facility with a hand amputation because of his caregiver's negligence.

In a dramatic press conference held earlier that day, the man can be seen holding up his bandaged right arm, showing off what remains after his hand had to be amputated. He had initially been admitted to the hospital on an earlier date while suffering from pneumonia. Soon after, doctors ordered for a monitoring line to be inserted into his body to help them more easily measure his blood pressure.

While inserting that blood pressure line, medical staff had to make two puncture wounds close to the man's biceps. Those spots soon became infected, causing his hand to turn black from the incision all the way down into his hand. Gangrene then set in. As the man's condition worsened, doctors had no other choice but to amputate the affected tissue, which in this case resulted in him losing his hand.

As for why the man's doctors ordered that his blood pressure be monitored via a monitoring line that was inserted into his body, that's unclear. That' s one of the questions that the victim and his attorney are looking to have his medical caregivers respond to by filing this medical malpractice lawsuit.

In the man's lawsuit, he accuses his medical staff of negligence. He is demanding that his medical bills be paid in full and that he be paid $1 million for his pain and suffering as well as future medical expenses.

Elmhurst Hospital forms part of the NYC Health Hospitals system, a city-owned network of medical care facilities. They have yet to respond to the man's allegations.

Delayed diagnoses and medical staff negligence result in thousands of people becoming more ill or losing their lives each year. If you feel that your condition worsened or that your loved one passed away after not receiving the quality of care he or she should have, then a Queens, New York, medical malpractice lawyer can provide you with guidance in your legal case.
