A 20-year-old is struck, killed along the Long Island Expressway

A 20-year-old Queens resident was struck by a Jeep Liberty while standing outside of his Honda Accord early in the morning on Wednesday, Oct. 25th. The collision occurred just before 12:05 a.m., shortly after witnesses reported having seen the man pull over into the shoulder of Clearview Expressway. He'd been driving in the direction of Long Island at the time.

Friends, who'd just spoken with young Uber driver before the crash, noted that he'd just dropped off a client of his moments before it. As a hard working person, his friends noted that it appears he might have stopped on the side of the road and gotten out of his car to stretch. It's when he did that an oncoming Jeep crashed into him, resulting in significant trauma to both his head and torso.

Paramedics who were summoned to the crash scene found the man on the verge of death. They quickly transported him to the North Shore University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries within a hour of his arrival there.

The Jeep's owner does not appear to have suffered any injuries in the crash. They remained at the scene and were reportedly cooperative with the police investigation into the crash. It's unclear if any charges will be filed against the SUV's driver for their role in causing the young cab driver's death.

This latest crash comes at a time in which the New York mayor Bill de Blasio has been working hard pushing the city's Vision Zero Initiative. The program centers around the setting of stricter speed restrictions and more aggressively enforcing them. Police have also been conducting more crash scene reconstructions to learn what caused different crashes and how to prevent future ones.

Before this latest traffic-related fatality, the city as a whole had seen 24 motorist deaths so far this year, a 8 percent decrease compared to the same time the previous year. Pedestrian deaths were holding steady at 30 percent less that last year's rate.

If your loved one has lost their life in a traffic-related accident, then a Queens car crash attorney may advise you of your right to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If you're eligible to do so, then it may be possible to recover medical and funeral costs, lost future income and other related damages associated with that individual's untimely death.
