A Queens doctor admits his negligence caused a patient's death

A 55-year-old Great Neck physician admitted that his negligence resulted in the death of a 30-year-old abortion patient just moments before the jury was set to announce their verdict in his Queens Supreme Court criminal case.

The trial had dragged on for more than a month at the time of his admission of guilt to criminally negligent homicide.

During the trial, prosecutors chronicled how the Bronx woman that the doctor admitted to killing was six months pregnant on July 9, 2016, when she came to the Liberty Women's Health in Flushing to have an abortion performed on her. Sometime after 1 p.m., while the doctor was performing the procedure, he apparently tore through the woman's cervix and pierced her uterine wall, ultimately cutting through an artery.

At trial, prosecutors argued that the steps the defendant took in performing this routine surgical procedure were far from textbook.

Witnesses told jurors that the woman immediately began bleeding out after this occurred. Even though the woman collapsed in the clinic's waiting room, was bleeding profusely and looked disoriented, the doctor ultimately released her to go home.

The victim's sister testified that the decedent fell out of her seat while riding home in her car before losing consciousness. This prompted her to quickly transport her to a hospital in the Bronx. Doctors initially diagnosed the woman as suffering from vaginal bleeding and quickly gave her several units of blood in effort to save her life. The woman succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.

An arrest was initially made back in October, just three months after the woman's arrest. At that time, the physician was charged with second-degree manslaughter. Had he been convicted for such a crime, he would have faced as many as 15 years in prison. The negligence charge that the doctor ultimately pleaded to carries a four-year maximum sentence. He's slated to be sentenced on June 26.

Many of us think of doctors as some of the few types of people that we can trust with our lives. That's apparently not always the case though.

If you've lost a loved one at the hands of a negligent physician, then a Queens attorney can advise you of your right to file a wrongful death lawsuit in your legal matter.
